publishing is estimated to grow
to $3.4 billion in 2002, an increase of
5.8% over 2001. Growth in 2001 compared to 2000 was 5.4%.

1996, there were 10 leading publishers with
total sales of $1.8 billion.

In
2000, there were nine top college textbook
publishers.
·
In
July, 2001, Thomson acquired Harcourt.
·
In
May, 2002, net sales for college publishers
grew 23%, from $44 million to $54 million.

Currently,
the top eight textbook publishers are Pearson
Education, Thomson, McGraw-Hill, Houghton
Mifflin, John Wily & Sons, Bedford,
Freeman and Worth, W.W. Norton and Jones and
Bartlett.

The
top eight publishers control 78% of the
college market, with sales in 2001 of $2.5
billion.
·
John
Wiley and Sons rose 6% to $141.3 million at
their fiscal year end in April 2002. This
increase resulted from
Wiley’s acquisition of 47 titles from
Thomson Learning.
